We rescue abused, neglected, and unwanted farm animals and tend to them with gentle patience, love and care. We then share them with children to teach kindness and compassion to animals, each other, and our planet.
We have been rescuing animals for several years now and discovered first hand how great the need was to create our organization. We are now a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit! Greener Pastures is in the process of looking for the best location to serve greater San Luis Obispo County. Referrals to owners of suitable rural acreage are greatly appreciated. 3-10 acres of flat fenced land with a barn and small living quarters is our ideal. This will allow us to help more animals, help more children, and open our doors to the public. We find loving homes for our adoptable animals so our doors can remain open to the animals who need us.
We are also looking for donors like you to take a leadership role in fundraising for our unique organization. Host a Give event or name us in your estate plans. Contact us for more information.
Our future programs will have an emphasis on children, but others can benefit as well. We share the history of each animal, their resilience and why it is important to show kindness and respect to others. Visitors will be invited to share hands-on time with the animals and experience the unconditional acceptance and healing that animals give naturally. In turn, this helps kids open up and have teachable moments that can last a lifetime! It teaches reverence for all life and helps eliminate bullying and promote loving kindness for a more peaceful community and planet. We offer an educational, intimate experience that they will never forget. They learn that even though we all look different on the outside, on the inside we are all the same. Visitors come away happier and have a fresh new perspective on life and the world around them!
Our emphasis is children, but there are many groups and organizations that can benefit from our programs: veterans and those suffering from PTSD, handicapped and special needs groups, troubled teens, recovering addicts, those recovering from traumatic brain injury, foster care, scout troops, students from local schools and colleges, mental health organizations, family services, cancer centers, even tourists!
“Children trained to extend justice, kindness and mercy to animals, become more kind, just and considerate in their relations to each other. Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sympathies; more humane, more law abiding, in every aspect, more valuable citizens.” National PTA Congress
Group Tours Greener Pastures will be open for group tours during the week once we have a few acres to get started on. After our presentation, our guests get to hug the cows, brush the horses, give the pigs tummy rubs, visit the turkeys, play with the goats and the sheep, and so much more! It is an educational, hands-on experience that they will never forget. Our program is appropriate for all ages.
Education We learn why roosters crow, why pigs love mud, why goats chew, and how each species communicates through body language. Kids gain an understanding of animals, see how much we all have in common, and have the opportunity to expand their empathy for all living beings. Learning kindness towards animals naturally transfers over into kindness in their daily lives. They see that animals aren't objects, but living beings with feelings and experiences much like their own.
Public Tours Greener Pastures will be open to the public every Sunday from 10am – 2pm and private tours by appointment.
Extended Youth Program Agencies for at-risk youth come for our once-a-month program 12 times a year. Kids naturally identify with animals, so we can use interactions with animals to teach youth how to behave towards other people. Often when children are abused, they turn their hurt around to abuse others. By teaching empathy and uniting kids with all life, our Youth Program helps turn these kids from bullies and abusers into protectors instead.
Special Needs Animals can provide unconditional love, kindness, and a non-judgmental attitude to all. The animals at Greener Pastures have so much love to give back, and they are perfect for people with special needs. Our environment is safe and quiet, giving special needs groups the freedom to be themselves, and the room to explore at their own pace. The animals teach forgiveness, love, trust, and a sense of responsibility, which means a great deal to many with special needs.
Internships Available 3 times per year to anyone over 18 interested in animal care, sustainability or working with kids.
Volunteers We welcome volunteers! Come work with our sweet animals. You can help with maintenance, feeding, grooming, cleaning, rescues, tours, sit with new animals that need TLC, and much more.
Workshops Being gentle with the animals helps us be gentle with each other, but what about our environment? We all need to be gentle with the earth and living sustainably isn't as complicated as you may think! We will be hosting classes and workshops for the community on how our daily choices affect the planet. Plant-based cooking, solar energy, recycling, composting, and utilizing grey water are just a few examples of our offerings. We teach how to leave a lighter carbon footprint by sustainable building, living green, and why kindness matters towards our planet, as well as towards others.
