We began rescuing animals in our suburban home. As that evolved, we recognized the need for a farm animal sanctuary on the Central Coast. "There were so many animals in need and very few, if any, places for them to go. We needed to step up on behalf of these animals." Greener Pastures Farm Sanctuary of San Luis Obispo became an official nonprofit organization in 2017.
People have empathy for companion animals, but often disregard farm animals as commodities. Typically farm animals are ignored and left to suffer, or they're slaughtered. We're here to show that there's a kinder way.
We have learned through experience that all animals are sensitive, they love their families and are very protective. They have a powerful instinct to live and to raise their young. Animals cry out when their friends or family members are missing or out of view. It's very special to gain an animals trust after humans have hurt and betrayed them. To witness them heal and see their unique personalities blossom at Greener Pastures is a huge reward.
When children visit Greener Pastures Farm Sanctuary, they get to learn about the animals in an age appropriate fashion and hear their stories of courage, triumph, and forgiveness. They learn that even though we all look different on the outside, on the inside we are all the same. This gives them the opportunity to expand their empathy for all living beings. Kids take these lessons and experiences home to their families and classmates and help create a kinder community.
